The Story of The Callwood Distillery

In the late 1800s, a privateer named Richard Callwood purchased the Arundel estate in Cane Garden Bay for his son, Richard Jr. The estate included what has become known as the Arundel distillery. It is the 4th generation of Callwood to operate the distillery. Rum has been a product of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) since the 1600s.

Arundel Estate, the Last Distillery on Tortola

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the golden age of rum production, there were 106 distilleries in the British Virgin Islands, 26 of which were on the island of Tortola.

Today, Callwood's rum distillery is the only one still in operation. The rum is made in oak barrels and copper stills at the Arundel distillery in Tortola, BVI, and then it is bottled and labeled for distribution.

Previously, Arundel rum was only distributed within the Caribbean islands. The Excellence Rum team went directly to the distillery via a small biplane to import this very rare rum into Europe.

About the Distillery

Behind the building that houses the distillery. This latter is 400 years old, you will find the sugarcane plantation with the coal-fired "boiler". You will smell the sweet aroma of rum being made. The boiler is burning slowly, the smell of sugarcane alchemy is penetrating in the air.
