Rum specialist Marco Savio of Savio Trading Srl in Aosta, Italy, is the founder and owner of the Ron Malteco brand. Originally, the rum was produced by the Licorera Quezalteca distillery in Quetzaltenango which belongs to the Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala group. But when, in 2011, Diageo took over 50% of the company, it was decided to use the rum produced only for its two varieties of rum, Zacapa and Botran.
Since Marco Savio was already having the rum Malecon made by the Caribbean Spirits Panama Distillery, it was obvious that the production had to be gathered there. The rum continues to be made according to exactly the same recipe and under the control of the Asociación de Maestros Roneros de Guatemala. That's why the label is "Ron al Estilo de Guatemala": a clear way to show how seriously Marco Savio takes this and how transparently he communicates about his rum. This is unfortunately not the case for all brands.
