Cambodia has long been a producer of sugarcane before all the sugar factories were destroyed during the civil war. The sugar cane was however, still present in the country in the wild. It is also considered to be of very good quality and very rich in flavors, particularly appreciated by the locals for its fresh juice.
It is only since the beginning of the 2000s that sugar cane cultivation has taken off.
It was around that time, two Venezuelan friends, Antonio Lopez De Haro and Daniel Pacheco arrived, and were surprised to find that no rum was produced there.
This is how in 2014 the Samaï brand was born in Phnom Penh. The brand produces molasses rums distilled in a small copper pot still.
