The rums Dzama from Nosy-Be, are made from sugar cane which undergoes the effects of the aromas of ylang ylang, pepper, clove and vanilla. All these rums are nobly enriched by the fragrance of these products, amalgamated in the roots of sugar cane that give a natural spicy scent, among the richest that the land of Madagascar can offer. Nicknamed the island of perfumes, Nosy-Bé, in the north of Madagascar, is famous among perfumers around the world for its production of ylang-ylang, a plant they cannot do without. In Madagascar, the cultivation of sugar cane and the rum industry was introduced in the second half of the 19th century by the Frenchman Jean Laborde, originally from Gers. Supported by the queen of the time, he also contributed a lot to the industrialization in general of the island. Alongside the widespread artisanal manufacture of toaka, a low-quality brandy, a rum industry has developed since the interwar period, linked to that of sugar, which was even an exporter for a time. On the island of Nosy-Bé, the sugar factory-distillery Dzamadzar dates back to 1929, and belongs to the company Vidzar, also located in Antananarivo. Its equipment was thoroughly modernized in the 80s. Its various rums with the Dzama brand have become today leader in Madagascar, and were marketed for the first time in France by the company Dugas.
