More than anything else, the name of Chamarel conjures up its seven-coloured earth, the majestic waterfall on the Baie du Cap River and the small, picturesque village dotted along a range of hillsides. Its history takes us back to a unique estate, owned by de Chazal de Chamarel, whose family originated from the Loire valley in France. An estate suggests tracts of land sharing a common history, but who can remember that one of the most illustrious Mauritians, the writer, intellectual and artist, Malcolm De Chazal, is related to the founders of the Chamarel estate?
