Rhum Agricole from Martinique

Rum from Martinique

Martinique is with Guadeloupe, the birthplace of French rum. If the settlers wanted to produce sugar, rum, then produced from molasses, offered them a significant additional income. At the end of the 19th century, because of a global sugar crisis, small producers in Martinique turned to pure cane juice rum, thus giving birth to the French style, while the large sugar factories continued their production of molasses rum. In this revolution, Martinique becomes the world's leading exporter of rum, and the city of Saint-Pierre the capital of rum. Martinique confirmed its rum vocation in the 20th century to the detriment of sugar, and the production of agricole rum exceeded that of molasses rum in the 1960s. From then on, Martinique struggled to obtain an Appellation Controled Origine which it obtains in 1996. The Rhum Agricole of Martinique becomes the first AOC rum in the world. For decades, Martinique has been setting the pace for pure cane juice rums in the world.
You will happily savor the rums Clément, JM, La Favorite, Survi, Neisson, HSE, Saint-James, Dillon, Depaz, A1710, Maison La Mauny, Trois Rivières, Bally, Hardy, Madkaud, and La Baie des Trésors, without forgetting all the independent bottlers coming to select gems on the Flower Island.
Martinique mainly produces white, amber and old rums, mainly in column but also in stills. The last molasses rums remain at the Galion distillery which produces a remarkable Grand Arôme rum.
