The Netherlands is not really known for rum. There are however several brands and independent bottlers who select quality liquids. Among the brands, By the Dutch, a young Dutch company born in 2015 produces rums made from sugar cane molasses.
We also note Zuidam Distillers, created in 1975 by Fred Van Zuidam producing very exclusive products. The 300m2 distillery has a small copper still and a small production line. Today it is a 3,600m2 state-of-the-art distillery with 4 new copper stills, over 1,000 oak barrels, 4 production lines and a modern storage tank. The Netherlands is also home to bottlers like The Duchess who select rums from all over the world.

Origins of Dutch Rum

Similar to several European countries, rum appeared in the Netherlands with the first imports of molasses from American sugar colonies, starting in the early 17th century. Initially reserved for medicinal use, this spirit was later popularized by the British Royal Navy over the following centuries, becoming very popular among Dutch sailors and traders.

The Dutch Antilles and Rum

It's largely due to the Caribbean islands colonized by the Netherlands, such as Curaçao, Saint Martin, and Aruba, that rum production developed in the country. Benefiting from a tropical climate conducive to sugarcane cultivation, these islands quickly gained importance in the Dutch economy, ensuring a significant portion of sugar and molasses exports to the mainland. Even today, most Dutch rums originate from these paradisiacal islands.

Characteristics of Dutch Rum

While Dutch rum shares many similarities with other rums produced in the Caribbean, it also possesses some distinct characteristics of its own.

The Distillation Process

Dutch rum is generally produced from fermented molasses and then distilled in traditional copper pot stills, much like many rums around the world. However, some producers also use more modern column stills to achieve a purer and less aromatic rum. Another uniqueness lies in the frequent use of wild yeast during fermentation, imparting a unique flavor to Dutch rum.

Aging and Blending

Dutch rum is typically aged in oak barrels, often ex-bourbon casks, for several years. However, a few distilleries opt for barrels that previously held other spirits, such as cognac or Madeira wine, to impart distinct notes to their rum. Following the tradition of French agricole rums and English rums, Dutch rum also adheres to the practice of blending: several rums of different ages are often mixed to achieve a perfect balance of flavors and complexity.

Different Types of Dutch Rum

There are mainly two major categories of Dutch rums:

Amber Rum: Also known as "aged rum" or "dark rum," this type of rum is aged in barrels for several years, usually between 3 and 12 years. It has an amber color and rich, complex flavors, with notes of dried fruits, spices, and caramel.
