Discover the different Nikka whiskies, their unmistakable flavors, and the captivating history of their creator.

Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt: The Legacy of the Father of Japanese Whisky

The Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt is a blended malt named in honor of Masataka Taketsuru, considered the father of Japanese whisky. This whisky is a blend of barrels from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries with a higher proportion of malt. It offers aromas of vanilla, caramel, coffee, cocoa, and dried fruits, providing a delightful alternative to the highly regarded Nikka 12-year-old.

  • Typical fruity and floral notes from Miyagikyo whiskies
  • Lightness and refinement in tasting
  • Tribute to Masataka Taketsuru and his British wife, Rita

Nikka Super Rare Old: The Cult Expression Since 1962

Since its launch in 1962, the Nikka Super Rare Old has been one of the most popular expressions of the Nikka brand. This blend contains a significant proportion of malt from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, giving it a unique character cherished by enthusiasts.

  • Harmonious blend of Yoichi and Miyagikyo malts
  • Rich and deep flavors for an exceptional tasting experience
  • A beloved classic sought after by connoisseurs

Nikka Coffey Malt and Coffey Grain: Innovation and Authenticity

Nikka Coffey Malt is a truly unique Japanese whisky made from 100% malted barley distilled in a Coffey column still dating back to the 1960s. The result is a whisky of unparalleled richness and complexity with woody and fresh aromas.

On the other hand, Nikka Coffey Grain is also distilled in Coffey column stills imported from Scotland since 1963. These two columns yield a whisky even richer and more complex than what can be achieved with modern stills.

  • Traditional techniques combined with constant innovation
  • Distillation in Coffey column stills for incomparable flavor
  • Richness and complexity of flavors, ideal for those seeking new tasting experiences

The Fascinating Story of Masataka Taketsuru and the Birth of Japanese Whisky

Coming from a sake-producing family, Masataka Taketsuru was recruited in 1918 by the Settsu Shuzo company to produce the first Japanese whisky. He later joined the Kotobukiya group, which would become Suntory, and built the first Japanese whisky distillery in 1924.

A few years later, his Scottish wife, Rita, encouraged him to pursue his dream: creating his own distillery. At the dawn of World War II, Masataka Taketsuru founded the Dai Nippon Kaju company, meaning "the great Japanese juice factory." Recognized as the father of Japanese whisky, Taketsuru was an adventurer and a pioneer who had the courage and determination to launch a new whisky tradition in Japan with the love and support of his wife Rita.

  • Inspired by Scottish culture and supported by his British wife
  • A visionary man who gave birth to an iconic brand
  • Legacy continued by the dedicated master blenders at Nikka
