In the world of Brugal rum, a veil of secrecy surrounds the creation of the nectars of this prestigious distillery. Since the end of the 19th century, the manufacturing secrets have been passed down from generation to generation within the Brugal family. By settling in the Dominican Republic, Don Andrés Brugal Montaner created a true legend. Today, we lift the veil slightly on the mysteries that surround the development of Brugal's exceptional rums.

The history of the distillery and its founders

Don Andrés Brugal Montaner, originally from Catalonia, trained in the art of distillation and blending of traditional Latin-Caribbean rums in the city of Santiago de Cuba. Driven by a spirit of innovation and perfectionism, he founded his own company in 1888 in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, under the name Brugal & Co. The success met by Brugal rums allowed them to quickly rise to the rank of internationally renowned distilleries.

The rigorous and innovative production process

  • Distillation: The first step in the production of Brugal rums is continuous column distillation, carried out in San Pedro de Macoris in the south of the island. This method allows the preservation of the aromatic richness of the rum and yields a superior quality product.
  • Aging: Brugal places extreme importance on the aging of its rums. This is done in American white oak barrels. The rums are thus stored in these barrels for several years to develop their aromatic complexity, roundness, and finesse.
  • Blending: The final step is the blending of various aged rums, carried out with meticulous care by the distillery's master blenders. This step achieves the perfect balance between aromas and tastes to reveal authentic and elegant rums.

Brugal rums: between tradition and modernity

The Brugal house offers rums intended for cocktail making like the Brugal Añejo, a blend of rums aged 2 to 5 years, or the Brugal XV Reserva Exclusiva with fruity and spicy notes. But it is especially in the field of sipping rums that Brugal demonstrates its expertise and love for well-done work. The Brugal 1888 Doblemente Añejado is the perfect example. This rum has undergone double aging, first for 6 to 8 years in American white oak barrels, then 2 to 4 years in barrels that contained sherry. This process gives Brugal 1888 remarkable aromatic complexity and balance.

Beyond their well-guarded secrets, Brugal rums always reveal this passion for quality and innovation that has made their reputation for over a century.

The keys to success: authenticity and excellence

The Brugal distillery remains true to its roots while betting on modern technical and technological advancements. This alliance between tradition and modernity allows Brugal's master blenders to create rums as tasty as they are elegant, ideal for pure tasting or used as the basis for refined cocktails.

An eco-responsible approach

Brugal is now committed to sustainable development. The use of environmentally friendly production methods, recycling of materials, and eco-design of packaging demonstrate this commitment made by the Brugal house to preserve our planet.

About Jassil Villanueva, Maestra Ronera of Brugal rums

The passion and expertise of the Maestros Roneros, a legacy passed down from generation to generation, give Brugal rums their quality and character. Since 2011, Jassil Villanueva, Miguel Ripol, and Gustavo Ortega represent the fifth generation of founder Don Andrés Brugal's family. As the first female Maestra Ronera of Brugal and the Dominican Republic, Jassil Villanueva brings sharp skills related to the selection and aging in sherry oloroso barrels, thus offering Brugal new perspectives.
