Belize has long remained on the sidelines of the cultivation of sugar cane reserved until the 18th century to its almost-neighbor Honduras. In the middle of the 19th century, Belize welcomed in the North of the country, Mexican planters fleeing the Mexican-American War. Then, in the 1860s, in the South, Confederates fleeing the American Civil War. Bringing their technique, they each develop in their region, the sugar industry throughout the country and establish small stills. But it was not until the 1950s and 1960s that more important structures developed, such as the Cuello distillery and especially the Travelers distillery, where many independent bottlers came to get their supplies. Because yes, Belize is a territory that is attracting more and more amateurs from several countries. Thus, The Duchess, the Spirit, Fair, The Nectar, Ferroni but also Excellence Rhum have selected gourmet rums from Belize. Note also the Copalli rum which offers organic rums. Belize rums are comparable to traditional British rums, with a more Latin twist. Distilled in columns, they are offered reduced or cask strength, organic or not, but always with attractive fruity notes.
