A Rich History Dating Back to 1753

The journey of Hampden Rum began in 1753 with the arrival of a Scotsman named Archibald Stirling in Jamaica. He decided to equip his property, the Hampden Estate, with a distillery to diversify its operations. The estate was then graced with the magnificent residence we know today as the Hampden Great House, and a commercial port in Falmouth at the start of the 20th century.

  • Founded in 1753 by Archibald Stirling
  • Business diversification with a distillery
  • Establishment of Hampden Great House and the Falmouth port

A Preserved Location Near the Cockpit Country Forest

Located near the protected Cockpit Country forest, the estate is surrounded by its own sugar cane fields. It can only be accessed by traversing an untarred road lined with giant palm trees. The site offers a truly idyllic setting that has allowed Hampden to preserve its ancestral expertise and develop an impressive production capacity.

An Ancestral Craftsmanship Respected and Perpetuated

The Hampden distillery has always produced high-quality rums, boasting a strong identity and a rich aromatic profile. Many independent bottlers source Hampden rums to include in their collections or to blend them in order to enhance their own creations. In 2009, the distillery transitioned from the Stirling family to Everglades Farms, while ensuring the continuation of traditional methods. Since 2011, it has been producing the white rum Rum Fire, followed by a Gold version in 2012. Furthermore, since 2018, a range of aged rums bearing the Hampden personal name has been launched, meeting with immediate success.

The Unique Fermentation Process: Key to Exceptional Flavor

The fermentation process of Hampden rum extends over a period of eight to fifteen days in wooden vats. It is here that wild yeasts are combined with the addition of dunder (vinasse) and a few secrets, bestowing upon Hampden rum its unique and generous characteristics.

  • Addition of vinasse and other secrets for a unique rum

The International Impetus of Hampden Rum

For a long time, Hampden rum remained discreet, allocating the majority of its production to the local market. However, thanks to the intervention of Luca Gargano, founder of the Habitation Velier brand, the Jamaican distiller opened up to exports. Today, rum enthusiasts around the world can appreciate the inimitable flavor of Hampden products.

The Single Cask

As for the single cask, whether they feature a black bottle in the style of Velier or are offered by independent bottlers, they also enjoy notable success.

The Marks

Jamaican Hampden rum is famous for its intense character and unique flavors. A key element of this uniqueness is the "mark". In the world of Hampden rum, a "mark" is a classification that indicates the level of esters, these aromatic compounds that influence the taste profile of the rum. The higher the number of esters, the richer and more complex the rum. Each mark is associated with a combination of letters, like "LROK" or "HLCF", which provide information about its origin and intensity. Understanding the marks is essential to appreciate the depth and variety of Hampden rums.

The Marks and Esters

Esters are chemical compounds formed by the reaction of an acid and an alcohol. Think of them as the little magicians of rum, creating distinct aromas such as fruits, flowers, and even buttery notes. In the world of rum, the higher the concentration of esters, the richer and more varied the aromatic profile. That's why connoisseurs often seek out Jamaican rums with a high ester content for an unmatched tasting experience. When you taste rum, think of esters, these invisible craftsmen of taste.
