A Glimpse into the Origins of Montebello Rum

Over the past decade, many distilleries in Guadeloupe have vanished, leaving only about ten independent local family productions today. Montebello rum is distilled in one of them, located in the highlands of Petit-Bourg Plain. Founded in 1930, the Carrère distillery has transformed from a small family-run business with local influence into an international producer of pure sugarcane juice. Montebello rum, marketed since 1975, is one of the most recognized brands produced on-site.

The Crafting Secrets of Montebello Rum

With modern facilities and traditional processes, the Carrère distillery is one of the last in the Caribbean to operate solely with steam using immense boilers. The Stirling boiler is renowned as one of the largest in the French West Indies and is an integral part of Guadeloupe's heritage. This is followed by the distillation stage in one of two columns, one made of copper and the other stainless steel, followed by reduction. Some rums are then bottled directly, while others are sent to aging cellars.

Steam Distillation

  • Exclusive use of the Stirling boiler, one of the largest in the French West Indies.
  • Traditional process preserving Guadeloupean heritage.
  • Distillation in two distinct columns: copper and stainless steel.
