Courcelles rum is one of the mythical rums of Guadeloupe. You have to go back to 1862 to understand the particular history of this bottle. The Courcelles factory was built that year in Saint-Anne, south of Grande-Terre. The factory was modernized very quickly and, for example, became one of the first to install shale lighting to provide better light during cane processing operations. In 1883, it handled 17,116 tons of cane against 10,250 tons nine years earlier. The sugar factory continues to expand by integrating the surrounding homes.
But in the 1920s, an attempt to merge the Courcelles, Gardel and Gentilly factories failed. It's bankruptcy. In 1928, the Factory had to be completely rebuilt after the passage of a cyclone. The Société Anonyme des Sucreries et Distilleries de la Guadeloupe, created in 1929, took over the Courcelles factory, notably with the desire to produce rum. The Domaine de Courcelles distillery was created in 1931. At this date, there are 74 smoking distilleries in Guadeloupe. On November 5, 1932, the “Rhum supérieur Courcelles” trademark was filed in court. The same year, the estate passed under the control of the Martinican, Armand Aubéry.
In Marie-Galante, industrial and financial operations are held under the aegis of André Bon. He brings together several distilleries to create the Société des Rhumeries de Saint-Louis. In 1949, André Bon, from Guadeloupe, bought Courcelles.
The previous year, in 1948, Courcelles had distilled a pure cane juice rum which remained for more than 20 years in barrels before being stored in tuns. In the 1950s, Courcelles was one of the last three factories to still belong to a Guadeloupean. The other factories are owned by Martinicans or Metropolitans.
In 1964, André Bon retired. The Courcelles factory closed and production was transferred to the Sainte-Marthe distillery belonging to the Huyghes-Despointes family. The Courcelles estate is shared between Gardel and Sainte-Marthe. In 1972, the Sainte-Marthe distillery closed and the rum from the Domaine de Courcelles, distilled in 1948, began to be marketed the following year, in 1973. The bottle we offer is a bottling that we believe to be from the late 1980s.
