For a new Flibuste !

Interview with Franck Dormoy, Operations Manager of the La Favorite Distillery

Hello and thank you for granting us an interview. La Favorite is releasing its new Flibuste, the 2001! This vintage is highly anticipated in the rum world. Can you explain what makes the Flibuste Vintages unique? Why do they hold a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts?

Hello Matthieu, thank you. Each vintage is unique and distinctive. The Flibuste has a style all its own, rich and warm, and has been part of the landscape of aged Martinique rums for nearly 50 years. Its aromatic profile and longevity certainly contribute to making it a standout rum.

What are the technical characteristics of this new La Flibuste vintage?

This vintage comes from the 2001 harvest, distilled and aged the same year. As we speak, we are in the midst of blending the barrels.

Do you use all types of barrels you have for the Flibuste, or do you have specific barrels for these vintages? How many barrels are dedicated to this La Flibuste 2001 vintage?

Every year, we age a portion of our harvest, the quantity of which varies depending on the yields and the number of available barrels. Here, we are talking about old aging processes; these are still ex-Cognac and ex-Bourbon oak barrels that housed our white rums. This year, we have 15 barrels for this Vintage.

How many bottles are produced?

This selection will give rise to about 4,200 numbered bottles.

Sometimes we hear that the La Flibuste vintages are going to stop, if only for a while. What is the reality? Will we have La Flibuste vintages in the coming years?

This has already been the case in the past; we bottle according to the vintages that we still have available in our cellar. Remember, for example, in 2020, we bottled 1995 then 1997 because we no longer had stock from 1996.

But it is true that the demand for aged rum is growing, while our stocks are not increasing, so these vintages are becoming increasingly rare and difficult for enthusiasts to acquire. And this is the case for our entire range of barrel-aged rums, whether young or very old.

There will still be La Flibuste bottlings in the future, not of every vintage, and it will be insufficient to satisfy the demand, that's for certain. This is partly why the rest of the range has its place, from the Grand Classics to the Special Vintages, there is enough to satisfy lovers of agricultural rum.
