There are rare bottles that we sometimes find when hunting, and then there are bottles that we didn't even know existed and that challenge us. This is the case of this rum from Plantations Lajus, vintage 1975, distributed by Eddie Barclay.
This Martinican rum comes from Habitation Lajus. Although the estate dates back to the 17th century, the estate was founded in 1774 by Baron de Lajus. It changed hands several times over the following century and landed in those of Jacques Bally in 1918. This new owner invested in the defense of agricole rum and worked on the aging of rums. He is one of the first to put his name on his bottles, contrary to the trend of sending rum in bulk to mainland France. We then read on the labels “Rum J.Bally, from the Lajus du Carbet plantations”. In 1930, Bally created its iconic pyramid bottle.
In the 1950s, his son joined him at the distillery to continue the activity. J.Bally died in 1963 and the management of the distillery was entrusted to his cousin Gérard Assier de Pompignan. The distillery stopped smoking in 1974. The column was moved to Saint-James then to the Habitation du Simon in 1987. In 1996, production was again brought back to Saint-James.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Eddie Barclay reigns over the French music industry. Almost all French stars from the 1950s to the 1970s were, at one time or another, produced by Maison Barclay. Originally a jazz composer, we owe him the importation into France of 33 and 45 rpm vinyl records which revolutionized the recording industry.
In 1978, he was diagnosed with an illness that prompted him to retire… an Eddie Barclay-style retirement. He retired to Saint-Tropez from where he managed a few businesses but above all he founded the “Nuits Blanches” where the “Band à Barclay” marched in the midst of hundreds of stars from show business and the Jet set.
We could spot there Alain Delon, Johnny Hallyday, Stéphane Collaro, Carlos, Eddy Mitchell, Charles Aznavour, Michel Sardou, Jean-Paul Belmondo but also international personalities. Among Eddie Barclay’s associates is Philippe Lavil, the grandson of J.Bally, the late owner of Plantations Lajus du Carbet…
We offer you this bottle of very old Plantations Lajus rum, distilled in 1975 and, according to our estimates, bottled in Martinique between 1982 and 1985. It has a strength of 45% and was distributed by Eddie Barclay, of Barclay Organization SNC, located on the avenue of Friedland, in Paris. It is easy to imagine that this rum was present at the famous "White Nights" of Saint-Tropez. According to our information, "Samir", handwritten at the top of the label, was the name of the fashion designer's butler, Daniel Hechter, close to Eddie Barclay.
Note also that there is a Bally rum, 1975 also grading at 45%....
