The Ricci Family, the passion for taste
Interview with Morgan Ricci, co-founder of “Famille Ricci” rums

Hello, thank you for granting us an interview. You entered the world of Rum in 2019 by founding the Ricci family. Who are the family members behind this project?

Hi Mathieu and thank you for this interview.

Indeed, Famille Ricci was founded in the spirit of creating a family-oriented company with the desire to pass on something to my daughter, if she has the desire and the same passion as me when she grows up. It's off to a good start since she asks me every day to smell different rums and that she makes blends based on the aromas she detects when smelling the different rums.

Otherwise today, there is my brother Esteban and my future wife Jade who accompanies me every day in this adventure, each with their responsibilities, and my parents who in a benevolent way accompany us in the structuring and development.

You made yourself known in particular by blending rums that no one had thought of blending, such as Bielle and Caroni. What is the general philosophy of the Ricci family rums in this area?

Our philosophy is above all taste. I wake up every morning with the desire to create rums that are tasteful and qualitative with complexity because for me a rum or another spirit must be able to offer us a wide aromatic palette that takes us on a journey, that gives us emotions. Afterwards, in my approach, I also try to do it at all levels, therefore on rums that are aimed more at the general public than at a more expert public. The objective is also to accompany newcomers to rum, towards more authentic and qualitative juices than what they have already known. We must lead the consumer of sugar towards more authentic things, those who love molasses towards the world of pure cane juice and vice versa.

For this we have several hats. We are independent bottlers but we work almost like a distillery, apart from the fact that we do not create the original alcohol because we select them. After that, we have an enormous amount of work, whether in production, with real work as a cellar master, constantly looking for the ideal styles of barrels for our juices, the degrees of barreling to obtain such or such aromas, the temperatures and hydrometries depending on whether I'm looking for concentration or elegance, research into the blends to seek out a particular aromatic profile, balance or not, a particular complexity.

We are constantly looking to create new cuvées that are out of the ordinary but always with great consistency, we are not looking to create a buzz by combining so-called untouchable rums, we are simply looking to give pleasure to the tasting and if we have to be bold for that, we always will be. Again the only important thing is the taste.

This year you are offering us an impressive series of rums, the Zodiac collection. Can you present it to us? When will the last releases of this collection take place?

The zodiac series was made in the spirit of having a range of very premium limited series but where the release price would not soar, because we try as much as possible to offer those who follow us extremely qualitative rums but where the prices still leave the possibility of affording them more easily than on other ranges. We also have fewer remorse opening the bottle.

Indeed, we realize that the big vintages take excessive prices and that they are aimed more and more at a clientele with very large means, and at collectors.

But the majority of our customers find it more and more difficult to indulge themselves with fine vintages because today the prices are going crazy, so we try to fight against that at our level.

For the Zodiacs, the aromatic philosophy is to make rums that have a character and a personality that broadly approximates the sign with which it has been associated. For example, the Bélier cuvée is a rum of character with the Hampden which brings watts, the Poisson cuvée which is a nicer sign, soft and linear, has been associated with a single cask from Foursquare.

There will be the 3rd wave of release during the summer and the last wave in October.

How did you associate the rum profiles with the signs of the Zodiac? Have you managed to set aside any personal dimension in this approach?

We simply referred to sites specialized in astrology to see in general the strong character traits of each sign. Then for rums it also works a bit the same way, each provenance, terroir, distillery has its own identity so we had to find common points with the signs. For the most complex signs, what better than to combine different rums to succeed in finding equivalent profiles. Indeed I did not put any personal dimension and I did not refer to people I know because that would have distorted my objectivity 🤣.

Which rums in this series should you start with to understand its different facets?

In my opinion, there is no ideal rum to start this range. Each cuvée has an identity, I would say that it depends on your desire and your mood of the day. If you want a rather elegant rum you have to taste the cancer, if you want sweetness, the pisces, if you want character and generosity the aries, if you want something complex and not at all balanced the aquarius etc. …. The strength of this range is that there is something for all tastes and all desires, just look at what makes up each cuvée to go towards your desire of the moment.

What are the future surprises for the Ricci Family? What should we expect in the second semester?

We are in the middle of the project to create a distillery because we want to be as close as possible to the raw material, to control the whole chain and this will allow us to flourish even more in our passion, and to give liberty to our creativity. This distillery aims to see the light of day in 2025 with the distillation of rum but also of whisky, gin and other plant and fruit alcohol. There will also be a large spirits museum to visit as well as a rooftop on the building to share over a drink and eat. However, Famille Ricci will not stop because we like to highlight the work of our colleagues because we all have different know-how and production methods that it is important to promote and make known.

Otherwise for the end of the year there will be the end of the Zodiac series, the new Ovni range and the new Quintessence and Hommage vintages. But the real novelties will normally be on other horizons since there will normally be our first Cognacs and Armagnacs.

In order to continue reading, we suggest you...
