The Maï Taï, one of the world’s most famous cocktails, is a timeless symbol of tropical escape. Its perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and alcoholic intensity makes it a must-try for cocktail enthusiasts.
The origin of the Maï Taï is surrounded by controversy, but the most widely accepted version credits its invention to Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron, a pioneer of tiki culture. In 1944, Trader Vic reportedly created this cocktail at his bar in Oakland, California, to impress friends visiting from Tahiti. After the first sip, one guest allegedly exclaimed, “Maita’i roa ae!” (“The best of the best!” in Tahitian), giving the cocktail its name.
However, Donn Beach, also known as Don the Beachcomber, claims to have created the Maï Taï as early as the 1930s. While the truth remains unclear, Trader Vic’s recipe has become the definitive version recognized
To prepare an authentic Maï Taï, you’ll need the following key ingredients:
6 cl of amber rum.
2 cl of aged rum (preferably an agricole rum).
2 cl of fresh lime juice.
1.5 cl of orgeat syrup.
1 cl of orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau).
0.5 cl of simple syrup (optional, depending on your sweetness preference).
Mix the ingredients: In a shaker filled with ice, combine the two rums, lime juice, orgeat syrup, orange liqueur, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
Serve: Pour the mixture directly into an old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice.
Garnish: Decorate with a lime wedge, a sprig of fresh mint, and, for an exotic touch, an edible flower or a paper umbrella.
The Maï Taï is a tribute to the art of mixology and a symbol of tropical spirit. Its simple yet refined recipe allows everyone to recreate the experience of a tropical paradise, whether on a beach or in the comfort of your home. So, grab your shaker, invite your friends, and let the Maï Taï bring a touch of magic to your evening!
