A must-see on the way to the Hebrides, Oban is a perfectly sheltered port that makes this city the capital of the West Highlands but also the natural link between the mainland and the islands. Founded in 1794, the Oban distillery was built by the Stevenson brothers. Extensively refurbished in the 1890s, it remains one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. Due to the small space between the cliffs and the sea, the bustling little town of Oban has remained huddled around its distillery. This natural limitation on its expansion explains why the distillery has always struggled to meet an ever-increasing demand.
