Indeed at the time sailors received a daily ration of alcohol of a pint to sanitize the water they drank. Only spirits with a minimum degree of 57% were allowed to board ships of the Royal British Navy. Indeed, if this alcohol were to be inadvertently poured on the gunpowder it could still catch fire while below 57%, it could no longer do so; thus putting the fleet at risk in the event of an attack by pirates or privateers.
