Mars 6 years old 2018 Oshi Dashi Tsunuki Aging Bourbon Barrel
History of the distillery
The Tsunuki distillery, belonging to the Hombo Shuzo group, is located on the island of Kyushu, in the south of Japan. Its subtropical climate — with an angel share reaching about 6% per year — creates a unique environment for aging spirits. This microclimate intensifies the exchanges between wood and whisky, giving Komagatake creations a rare complexity and a dense texture.
Presentation of this Komagatake
This single malt made from peated barley at 50 ppm rested for 6 years and 8 months in a Bourbon Barrel. Bottled at 58.4% in single cask #5458, it embodies the encounter between Japanese peat and the vanilla sweetness of the bourbon cask. The edition, limited to 180 bottles, highlights an assertive style, where purity and intensity come together.
Tasting notes
Marked by a peat that is initially dominant and gradually integrated into a more complex whole, this whisky reveals a pure and balanced expression, carried by the depth of the ageing in Tsunuki.
Mars
Originally from Japan, the Mars distillery has a history as tumultuous as it is out of the ordinary. Its founder is none other than Kiichiro Iwai, the man behind the departure for Scotland of the famous Masataka Taketsuru and especially owner of a spirits company producing shochu (Japanese brandy). The Shinshu Mars distillery enjoys an exceptional geographical location offering its whisky a singular character.
