Saint James Old rum 1960s / 1970s
History of Saint James
Founded in 1765 by the alchemist priest Edmund Lefébure, the Saint James brand embodies a rich and tumultuous history. Initially established in Saint-Pierre, Martinique, to support the Order of the Fathers for Charity, the distillery has survived through the ages, from the French Revolution to its takeover by François-Paulin Lambert in 1890. An innovator, Lambert patented the iconic square bottle in 1882. Despite the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902 and the upheavals of the rum market after the First World War, Saint James was able to endure, converting to the production of agricultural rum and moving to Sainte-Marie in 1974 under the aegis of new owners, including Cointreau and then La Martinquaise. Today, with an annual production of more than 4 million liters of rum, Saint James remains a pillar of the rum industry in Martinique.
