Saint James Vintage 1885
It was Paulin Lambert, a famous wine merchant and importer in Marseille, who owned Saint James. In 1882, he registered the Saint James trademark with the Commercial Court of Marseille, as well as the shape of the square bottle with a flat bottom, which we find on this present vintage. The 1885 vintage presented here is an agricultural rum distilled from cooked vesou which follows a fermentation period of 3 to 5 days. The rum is then aged in oak barrels. It is estimated to be four to five years old, according to oenologist Marc Sassier. It is then bottled in the famous emblematic bottle in liter format.
In 1902, the eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed a large part of the distillery as well as all the rum stocks. It is thanks to a succession of purchases of the distillery by Picon and then Cointeau that bottles have survived and have been found in Europe and then repatriated to the Saint James distillery, now located in Sainte-Marie.
It was in the 80's, a certain Luca Gargano was interested in agricultural rum, and discovered this stock of old vintage from the Plantations Saint James. He acquired nearly 200 bottles of this vintage and repatriated them to Italy under the importation of the company Velier S.p.A.
To date, the stock of the 1885 vintage at Velier is exhausted, there are still about 50 bottles of this 1885 harvest, which the oenologist preciously keeps at the rum museum in Sainte Marie (Martinique)
We find some "drams" from this vintage in the blend of the prestige cuvée 250 anniversary of the Plantations Saint James
The photos on the right illustrate this monument of history and are a perfect reflection of the quality of conservation of this bottle.
This bottle, very rare, has a capacity of 1 litre, with an alcohol content of 47%, its level is mid-shoulder, its cap is in very good condition and leak-proof. The main label is intact, the collar mentioning the year of harvest is also in very good condition. An Italian tax stamp covers the seal and is in impeccable condition. One side of the bottle evokes, through a label, the 1885 harvest and mentions the company Moon Import, the first independent Italian bottler born in the 80s. This bottle is delivered naked of any secondary packaging and has a parafilm on the neck of the bottle.
