The people who started creating Smith Cross rum were Smith Cross fans. They created Smith Cross Limited to keep alive the legacy of this man, Norman "Smith Cross" Collins.
They started by starting a small ready-to-wear store in Philadelphia by collaborating with local artists who made leather pieces, sneakers, t-shirts, and other products featuring the Smith Cross logo. Since Smith Cross spent half of his life in the navy (and the second half tattooing sailors), it was only natural to create a spiced rum in his name. A real cult began to develop around this rum and very quickly, they started selling everything they produced. Background and its history Perhaps because it was transported around the globe by sailors or perhaps simply because it tasted good, rum has become the most prolific spirit on the planet. Although some places claim the quality of their own variety of rum, the Caribbean is most generally recognized as the heart of rum production (which is why Smith Cross rum is and always will be distilled there). The history of rum has been intertwined with Caribbean culture for over 400 years, springing alongside the cane sugar plantation industry. The seventeenth century marked a turning point in the history of rum. His quality has progressed by leaps and bounds, as has his appreciation of people. Around 1789, a huge cask of the most beautiful rum in the Caribbean was chosen for the first presidential inauguration of a rising nation called the United States of America. Today, distilled rum has more than 200 years of experience behind it providing us with a perfect art of distillation, maturation and blending.
