As we understand well now, maintaining a subtle balance of aromas is essential when pairing a cigar with one or more rums during a tasting, ensuring that neither element dominates the other.
Jamaican rums with high ester content, known for their exceptionally high aromatic concentration, are at the heart of our discussion. Originally, these rums were intended for industrial purposes rather than neat tasting, until recently. Their aromatic intensity can easily overwhelm the taste subtleties of any cigar, creating an unfortunate imbalance. Moreover, it is common for these rums to be served at a high alcohol content, which, as we have already explained in a previous article, does not promote a successful pairing. Generally, it is therefore not recommended to pair this type of rum with a cigar if one aims for perfect harmony of flavors.
However, it is essential to note that every rule has its exceptions. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the art of pairing is a highly subjective experience, deeply rooted in individual preferences. Taste pleasure remains the top priority, and there is no need to get lost in rigid rules.
In the complex world of cigars and spirits, it is possible to find surprising combinations that, although contradicting established norms, can offer unique and exhilarating sensory experiences. The key is to remain open to exploration, to follow your own palate, and not to fear shaking up conventions to discover unexpected pairings that might awaken new taste passions. When it comes to pairing, the pursuit of personal pleasure is always the compass that guides us, even beyond established rules.
