The merchants bought barrels in the colonies and then repatriated them by sail and bottled them in France. We could well talk about dynamic aging, and this, in the nineteenth century!
Generally, the rums sung were 60 - 65% - it is then that the degree was reduced to 40 to 45%, often by the trader.
