Jamaica is known worldwide for its paradise-like landscapes, catchy music, and of course, its rum! The National Rums of Jamaica LTD (NRJ) are the pride of this local industry with their distilleries offering an impressive variety of rums. Comprising a group of experienced distillers, delve into the hidden secrets behind these beverages loved all over the world.

The history of National Rums of Jamaica LTD

This journey began in the early 20th century with three main distilleries located in different parts of the island: Long Pond, Clarendon, and Innswood. Today, they all belong to the NRJ group. Over the years, these companies have managed to develop their production to offer authentic and quality Jamaican rums worldwide.

The Long Pond and Clarendon distilleries

Long Pond is a distillery established in 1753 that produces a wide range of traditional Jamaican rums, from standard rum to the most renowned aged rums. The Clarendon distillery, on the other hand, has a rich history dating back to 1949. It is especially famous for its use of the artisanal method called "Pot Still". This traditional technique results in a distinctive and high-quality rum.

The Innswood distillery

Lastly, we have the renowned Innswood distillery, founded in 1948. Although no longer operational today, it was long recognized for its light rums that brought a touch of freshness to the various varieties offered by the NRJ group.

The manufacturing process at National Rums of Jamaica LTD

At National Rums of Jamaica LTD, the master distillers prioritize respecting Jamaican tradition in their manufacturing process to produce authentic rums with a unique taste. This involves using local raw materials, such as sugarcane grown on-site, as well as selecting the methods of distillation and aging.

Distillation and aging

Depending on the specifics of each rum, two distillation methods can be used: the "Pot Still", highly favored at the Clarendon distillery, and the column still which allows for varying alcohol and aromatic content. Regarding aging, it takes place in either American or European oak barrels, depending on the desired notes for the rum. The duration of this process can vary, typically ranging from 2 to 15 years or even longer for certain vintages.

Blending and bottling

Once the aging is complete, the rums are carefully blended following specific recipes to achieve the desired range: light, medium, or full-bodied rums. Subsequently, they are filtered and bottled for sale.

The flagship products of National Rums of Jamaica LTD
