Blanton's

Launched in 1984, Blanton's Single Barrel revolutionized American whiskey and restored it to its former glory. The first bourbon to be bottled on a barrel-by-barrel basis, Blanton's is produced in the Buffalo Trace distillery located in the heart of Kentucky, the world's home of thoroughbred horses.

This straight bourbon bears the name of Colonel Albert Blanton who ran the distillery from 1912 to 1953 and who selected for special occasions or distinguished guests a barrel from his best cellar, the famous "Warehouse H". The latter, particularly exposed to the sun, is also heated during the harsh winter months to promote the maturation of the whiskey. The creator of Blanton's, Master Distiller Emeritus Elmer T. Lee, was inspired by his illustrious predecessor.

Albert B. Blanton: From Novice to Master in Bourbon Production

In 1897, Albert B. Blanton joined the company as an office clerk at the age of 16. Subsequently, he became the director of the establishment in 1921. Despite the prohibition on alcohol sales, the government granted special permission to continue production in certain distilleries, including Buffalo Trace. Following the repeal of this ban, Colonel Blanton and the distillery faced other obstacles. However, thanks to his determination, bourbon production continued within the facility.

He quickly constructed Warehouse H, a warehouse with a wooden structure covered in tin metal. Later, Albert B. Blanton discovered that whiskies stored there benefited from accelerated aging due to the intense heat during the summer. Temperature variations, humidity, and bottle positioning in the cellar gave the whiskey a unique aromatic profile.

The Birth of Blanton’s: Elmer T. Lee's Vision

After serving during World War II, Elmer T. Lee took his first steps at Buffalo Trace Distillery in the late 1940s. Over time, he gained experience and skills, eventually becoming the master distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Shortly before his retirement, Elmer T. Lee aimed to create an exceptional bourbon. He innovated after the end of prohibition by creating new products to attract new consumers.

The Complex Aromatics of Blanton's Bourbon

In its various expressions, Blanton's bourbon reveals a rich and precise aromatic palette marked by notes of grains, candied fruits, spices, flowers, and citrus.

  • Grain Notes: The flavors of malt and grain stand out on discerning palates.
  • Candied Fruits: A burst of fruity sweetness complements the dominant notes.
  • Spices: In the mouth, a subtle blend of spices imparts character to the whisky.
  • Flowers: Some floral hints are also present in certain tasting profiles.
  • Citrus: A citrusy contrast offers a slight acidity to the overall experience for a harmonious finish.

Bourbon Whiskey: A Tradition from Kentucky

Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon is produced in the state of Kentucky, known as the Bluegrass State due to its vast pastures and fertile lands. While no law designates Kentucky as the exclusive location for producing this spirit, over 90% of the world's production comes from this American state. It's worth noting that pioneers of Irish, Scottish, and German origin who settled in the western United States brought their expertise in distillation and their stills.

A Unique Collection of Stoppers Pays Homage to Horse Racing

Since 1999, a collection of eight different stoppers has been created. Each one represents a horse and jockey in various postures corresponding to the stages of a horse race, from first to last. Besides its status as a whisky producer, Kentucky is also a major hub for horse racing. In fact, one of the most famous horse races in the world, the Kentucky Derby, takes place there. This unique design of stopper allows the Blanton's brand to pay tribute to this equestrian tradition of Kentucky alongside bourbon.

In conclusion, Blanton's is an exceptional bourbon, the result of the passion and expertise of prominent figures like Albert B. Blanton and Elmer T. Lee. Between tradition, innovation, and cultural tributes, this American brand offers whisky enthusiasts a range of complex flavors rooted in the rich heritage of Kentucky.
