Papalin, the brand of rum blends by Velier

Papalin is a project dedicated to blends created by Luca Gargano. The idea originated from the desire to revisit the history of rum in the late 1800s, when Jamaican traders began creating blends without indicating from which distilleries they came.

Aged rum blends from the tropics have gradually disappeared since the 1970s, when distilleries began to sell their products: Papalin therefore intends to revive the old tradition. The goal is to group rums from a single island that are fully produced and aged in the distilleries. The first collection is dedicated to Jamaica: Papalin Jamaica.

Velier and Papalin, two opposites

When we talk about Velier, it refers to rum from a single estate, plantation, or dwelling, with a single manufacturing process and often mentioned on the label.
Papalin, on the opposite, was created for the expression of blends by its Patron, Luca Gargano.

History of Papalin Rums

1st Release, 2014: The Birth of the Very First Papalin Blend

Luca Gargano had a stock of Cuban rum aged three years, but the supreme leader was creating obstacles for its market launch - probably due to the name, Ultima Revolucion, he had chosen for it - as well as several barrels of old Venezuelan rum, matured using the solera method. To this, he added 10% of 16-year-old Caroni and allowed the mixture to age for a year in Scotland, in barrels previously used for Demerara and Caroni. In short, a remarkable concoction. Thus was created Papalin - pronounced Papaline, the Italian way.

2nd Release, 2022: Heading to Jamaica

Luca gets back in the saddle with blends and this time offers a variation of the same assembly of two 7-year-old Jamaican rums, but in two different versions. These are two bottling strengths 47% and full proof at 47.18%. The blend is from Hampden Estate and Worthy Park.

3rd Release, Late 2022: Direction Haiti

Haiti is bottled through a wonderful blend of various Clairins, all distilled in 2017. It includes Clairins Vaval, Sajous, Casimir, and Le Rocher, as well as rum from Luca Gargano's new distillery in Port-au-Prince. The aging is as exceptional as the blend, with barrels from Mount Gay, Caroni, Cognac, and bourbon used for maturing this rum. A very good 4-year-old rum at 53.1°

4th Release, 2023: Haiti Round 2

Once again, it's a Papalin from the Clairins distilleries: Sajous, Vaval, and Casimir but with extended aging and this time in Lustau house's oloroso sherry casks. A delight bomb

2024: Reunion Island is in the Spotlight at Papalin

Papalin Reunion is a blend of several distilleries, with all rums aged at least 10 years. The blend is carefully made and is 50% ABV. Currently, this Papalin Reunion is the best Velier accessible to everyone. Discover it now before it's too late.

In Conclusion

Papalin is an easy-to-enjoy blend rum and generally affordable for all budgets, provided it is purchased upon release from official stores.

Frequently Asked Questions About Velier Papalin

Where to Buy Velier Papalin?

Although not easy to find, Papalins are available at rum specialists like Excellence Rhum, online on their site and in their specialized shop in Paris at 16 rue Dauphine.

Is Papalin a True Velier?

Yes, Papalin is the result of original creations by Luca Gargano, the owner and director of Velier. The bottles are identical to those of pure single rum, and unfortunately, speculation has already started affecting the value of these elixirs.

Other rum ranges from the Velier house

  • - Habitation Velier: This range bottles only 100% pot still rums. Rums distilled exclusively in a pot still, therefore very aromatic.
  • - National Rums of Jamaica LTD: a joint venture between Velier and NRJ, an association of Jamaican distilleries.
  • - Hampden Estate: Since 2021, La Maison & Velier officially distributes and bottles the rums from the distillery (aged on-site).
