History and artistic collaboration

For this third edition, La Maison du Whisky and Velier have invited Spanish photographer Cristina De Middel, a member of Magnum Photos, to capture the essence of the mythical Hampden Estate distillery. His shots, imbued with a cinematographic atmosphere, sublimate the humidity of the fermentation rooms, the facades overgrown with vegetation and the raw beauty of the place. Four of his works illustrate this exclusive series, a perfect fusion between visual art and the heritage of Jamaican rum.

Characteristics of rum

Distilled in the parish of Trelawny and aged for eight years, Hampden ♢H is the result of a ten-day prolonged fermentation, imparting a remarkable aromatic intensity. Its profile is between 900 and 1,000 g of esters per hectolitre of pure alcohol, the signature of rums with a high ester content. Mineral, empyreumatic and slightly medicinal, it reveals oxidative accents sometimes reminiscent of the peat bogs of Islay, a unique sensory journey between Jamaica and Scotland.

Hampden Estate

Built around 1750 the Hampden distillery originally belonged to a Scotsman Archibald Sterling. Hampden is known for its heavy rums distilled in copper stills. The fermentation is long and natural (no use of commercial yeasts).
