Hardy

Founded in 1830 by Emilien Bonneville, the Hardy plantation is located in Tartane on the Caravelle peninsula (Martinique). All that remains are the ruins of the steam engines and fermentation tanks.

Distillery Hardy

The lightning bolts and the column have been dismantled. This distillery has not been smoking since 1996 but the adventure continues with Jean Claude Hardy, the current owner of the distillery and sugar cane plantations. The only difference is that the rum is now distilled in Sainte Marie (Martinique) in the Saint James distillery.

Mr. Hardy bottles and sticks the labels by hand.

Explore the Treasure of Caravelle: Hardy Rum

In the heart of the Caravelle peninsula, a region once infamous for piracy in the Caribbean, lie the lands of Hardy Rum. Between the majestic Treasure Bay, the imposing ruins of Dubuc Castle, and the shimmering waters of Galion Bay... come discover the Treasure of Caravelle: Hardy Rum!

The Story of the Hardy Distillery

It all began in 1830, when the "La Grâce" Estate became the Tartane Estate. At that time, it housed a dwelling, industrial facilities, sugar cane plantations, and a windmill, still visible today from the road.

A few years later, Emilien BONNEVILLE acquired the distillery and passed it on to his daughter Clémence, married to Gaston HARDY of the SOURCES.

For nearly two centuries, the HARDY family has preserved this distillery as a family jewel, continuing to produce the famous Hardy Rum...

1923 and 1936 The Tartane Estate produces Hardy Rum

Gaston HARDY of the SOURCES quickly won several prestigious medals (gold in Marseille for his aged rum in 1923 and silver in Paris in 1936…).

In 1930, Hardy becomes a family story.

Gaston HARDY (the father) calls on his son, also named Gaston, to take over.

1955: Gaston Hardy, owner of the distillery

Gaston HARDY (the son) in turn becomes the owner of the HARDY Distillery. To increase the renown of HARDY Rums, he creates the famous Straw Rum, aged from 12 to 18 months in oak barrels, recognized by connoisseurs and contributing to the reputation of HARDY Rums.

The 1970s: Modernization of the Hardy Distillery

Gaston Hardy brings his engineering expertise to modernize the production tool (mill mechanism, concrete chimney, distillation column...). He designs the automatic feeding system himself.

1990s end and beginning of the distillery

The death of Gaston HARDY leaves behind a distillery active until 1994.

2000s to 2024

Under the impulse of Maurice HARDY, his heirs take over the reins and move the production to another distillery, where the famous HARDY Rum is still produced today, respecting the quality standards of the controlled designation of origin (AOC MARTINIQUE).

A store, managed by Jean Claude HARDY, one of the heirs, offers the range of HARDY Rums at the entrance of the site.

2024 to Today

Jean-Pascal, grandson of Gaston HARDY, decides to continue the adventure with the support of his family and plans to give new life, in the coming years, to this distillery that has been the pride of the village of TARTANE for nearly two centuries.

Visit of the Hardy Distillery

A rehabilitation project for the distillery is under study (restoration and enhancement of equipment, museum, aging cellar, shop, landscaping...). Visit when you are passing through Tartane!

Location: The Caravelle Peninsula

The Caravelle Peninsula, classified as a Nature Reserve, is definitely worth a detour.

It offers a diversity of characteristic landscapes, ranging from wooded areas to hills covered with sugar cane fields that stretch to the sea, on both sides of the peninsula, offering breathtaking panoramas!

Nestled in the heart of the Caravelle, the charming village of Tartane wins over with its tranquility, bordering a first beach with calm waters, protected by a coral reef.

The fishermen's yoles rhythm and color this idyllic picture, while the fish merchants attract pelicans and frigates. A variety of restaurants, offering delicious Creole cuisine dishes accompanied by Hardy Rum, benefit from the day's catch.

Former distillery and Dubuc Castle

Just before the Brèche beach, on the right, stands the former HARDY Distillery, currently under a rehabilitation project.

Then, a few kilometers away, a stop is necessary at the ruins of the famous DUBUC Castle, a true historical testimony of Martinique. The visit of the ruins of the Castle reveals its construction in 1725 by Louis DUBUC, descendant of Pierre du BUC, who arrived in Martinique in 1657 following a duel.

At the beginning of the 18th century, with the Bourbons' desire to strengthen their alliance with Spain, privateering was encouraged throughout the island. DUBUC, among these small settlers who found attractive opportunities in piracy, marks this period of buccaneers, buccaneers, pirates, corsairs, and other freebooters.

Hardy Rums in Detail

The reputation of Hardy Rums is based on balanced and fragrant blends, carefully crafted.

Hardy: White, Aged, we explain everything!

The Hardy White Rum 50% offers a classic experience with its pronounced floral aromas, highlighting the sugar canes harvested in the Caravelle region. Its characteristic sweetness is enhanced by notes of honey and orange blossom, both on the nose and in the mouth.

The Hardy Amber Paille Agricole Rum offers additional complexity with its aromas of vanilla and fruits, such as dates and figs, complemented by a subtle touch of pepper. Its prolonged and round finish makes it a most pleasant tasting experience.

For lovers of more mature flavors, the Hardy Aged Agricole Rum VO offers an enriching experience with its woody notes developed through extended aging in barrels. The nuances of chocolate and coffee blend harmoniously with touches of vanilla and cinnamon, offering a rich tasting experience.

The Hardy Very Old Rum (VSOP) offers a comforting tasting experience. With an age of at least 6 years, this blend will reveal all the power of an old
