Emperor

This brand new rum brand was born from the imagination of two enthusiasts, Christophe Aulner, recently installed in Mauritius, and Bruno Le Merle, a local entrepreneur. Their idea? Offer rums assembled with eaux-de vie distilled from pure cane juice and molasses. And there is a certain logic to this project seeing the light of day in Mauritius. The island was first under French (1714-1810) and then English (1810-1968) before gaining independence (1968).

Sugar cane has always been a favorable ground for its development in the Mascarene archipelago (Rodrigues, Reunion and Mauritius). It is even said that it was implanted before the colonization of Europeans by Arabs or migrants from Malaysia. It now covers 72,000 hectares, or 85% of the island's arable land. It is obviously the main agricultural resource but it mainly concerns sugar with 600,000 tonnes produced per year. However, there are several rum distilleries (Chamarel, La Bourdonnais, New Grove, Saint-Aubin), spread throughout the territory, which produce indifferently from pure cane or molasses juice. So it wasn't too difficult for our two entrepreneurs to source juice. It is the discovery of the different manufacturing processes and the incredible variety of tastes that pushed them to bring together traditional and agricultural rums. To make the aromatic palette even more complex, if need be, they offer two blends: Emperor Heritage mixes rums aged in ex-bourbon and French oak barrels, Emperor Sherry finish blends rums aged in ex-bourbon barrels with a ripening in ex-sherry barrels. The rums Emperor want to marry the cultures, know-how, tastes and unique flavors that Mauritius offers.
