The Origins of the Damoiseau Brand

On the East coast of Grande-Terre, a few kilometers from the town of Le Moule, lies Domaine de Bellevue. Left abandoned for a certain period, it was purchased in 1942 by Roger Damoisson, a former engineer who swiftly redirected it towards rum production. Today, his rum is highly regarded in Guadeloupe, representing nearly half of the Guadeloupean market share, and it has also gained international recognition with exports to around forty countries!

A Diverse Range of Rums for All Tastes

Damoiseau offers a wide selection of rums tailored to different preferences and budgets. Among its products, you'll find:

  • White Rum: For an affordable option, you can go for Damoiseau White Rum, priced at under twenty euros. More refined versions like Cœur Blanc, Oxygen Argent, or Expérience 69 are also available.
  • Amber Rum: For those who prefer a rum with milder notes, the VO (Very Old) and VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) blends are perfect choices.
  • Aged Rum: These vintage rums have matured for several years, acquiring unique depth and aromas over time. Among these, you can choose between the 2008 and 2009 vintages.
  • Flavored Rum: For enthusiasts of flavored rums, Damoiseau also offers a Shrubb as well as rums with fruity flavors.

The Family Saga Behind Maison Damoiseau

Since its acquisition in 1942, Domaine de Bellevue has been managed by different generations of the Damoiseau family. Roger's son took over after the founder, Roger Damoiseau, and later, in 1995, his own children assumed his position. This family continuity has allowed the company to preserve its expertise and modernize over time.

The Distillery's Evolution

In the beginning, the facilities were quite basic and lacked electricity. Over the years, the estate has been equipped with three high-performance distillation columns: Speichim at the bottom, Roger in the middle, Iméca, and finally Honoréat the top. This technological progress has contributed to maintaining the consistent quality of rums produced by Damoiseau.

The Rum-Making Process at Damoiseau

Prior to distillation and aging, the crucial first step takes place directly in the fields where Damoiseau's sugarcane grows. Thanks to favorable year-round sunlight and a limestone-rich soil particularly suited for this type of cultivation, the sugarcane's exceptional quality greatly contributes to the unique taste of Damoiseau's rums.

Fermentation

After harvesting, the sugarcane is crushed to extract its juice. Subsequently, the sugarcane juice undergoes fermentation for 24 to 36 hours to produce a cane wine with an alcohol content of 5%.

Distillation

The cane wine is then distilled in one of the columns present on the estate before being bottled or aged in Damoiseau's cellars.

Aging Stage

Some Damoiseau rum blends are aged in oak barrels for several years, imparting them with unparalleled aromatic complexity. An example of such a rum is the Damoiseau Pure Canne White Rum with an alcohol content of 40°, which reveals the full intensity of fresh sugarcane aromas.

In essence, the Damoiseau brand stands out for its family history, product variety, and consistent quality of the rums it offers. Whether you're a fan of white, amber, aged, or flavored rum, Damoiseau surely has something to satisfy your taste buds!
